Exhaust System

Exhaust System Work

The exhaust system in your vehicle not only decreases the noise your vehicle makes and improves fuel efficiency, but it also reduces the amount of harmful pollutants and noxious fumes your car releases into the environment. A standard exhaust system consists of the following components:

  • Exhaust manifold: Connected to the engine, the exhaust manifold routes gases and pollutants from the combustion chamber of your car's engine to the exhaust pipe.
  • Exhaust pipe: This component connects all of the separate parts of the exhaust system and carries gases and pollutants to each of these parts.
  • Catalytic converter: The catalytic converter, as the name suggests, converts hazardous pollutants in the exhaust into gases that are less harmful to the environment.
  • Muffler: This most recognizable component of your exhaust system is primarily responsible for reducing the engine noises your vehicle makes.
  • Resonator: Not a standard component on all vehicles, the resonator is essentially an additional muffler that works to further reduce the noise produced by your vehicle.
  • Tail pipe: The tail pipe is the means by which converted gases are carried out of your vehicle and released into the environment.

How Often Do I Need Exhaust System Servicing?

You should follow the exhaust system service intervals recommended in your vehicle owner's manual and the emissions regulations for the state of Arizona. If you notice a rattling sound while your vehicle is idling, a loss of power or vibration while it is in operation, or are experiencing reduced fuel efficiency, however, it is a good idea to have your exhaust system checked earlier than the recommended maintenance interval.

If you suspect that your vehicle has an exhaust system problem, the certified automotive technicians at Greulich's can diagnose the issue and provide professional repair or replacement services to get your car running like new again.
